Rehoming Policy and Procedure
If you are considering offering a home to one of our animals, please read the information below
At Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary it is important to us that we make the best match possible for both you and your rescue animal. We take extra care as we do not want our animals being returned because this is stressful for all concerned. So please be patient throughout the rehoming process. Please be aware that we reserve the right to refuse any application at any stage if we feel that it is not in the animal’s best interest to be placed with the applicant.
Before you submit your application, please consider important factors involved in pet ownership –
· Make sure you are committed to taking care of a pet in the long-term and can you fulfil their needs.
· Think about your lifestyle, do you have time to walk a dog? do you work long hours away from home?
· Be prepared to invest in your pet - veterinary care, equipment, food, and training can be expensive.
· Consider any existing pets and think if they will get along well with your chosen new rescue pet.
· Check that your home and your family are prepared for the arrival of your pet. Be aware that you need patience. When your pet arrives, everything is new for them, and they need time to settle in.
· Know that you will feel good about the fact that you’ve given a pet a much-needed home!
Home Check
If your application to adopt one of our animals is accepted, then you will need a home check. This involves Easterleigh animal welfare staff visiting you in your home to check that you have suitable accommodation and to discuss your experience and expectations. We evaluate all home environments equally
Meet and Greet
Should your application and home check be successful, we would then arrange a ‘meet and greet’. This is where you will visit your chosen pet, either at the sanctuary or the foster home, and introduce yourselves to them. It is important that all members of the family who will be living with the new pet attend the meet and greet. If the meeting is successful a second meeting will be arranged. This is when any existing pets need to be introduced. After this meeting we will discuss the next step.
Collecting Your Pet
Having successfully completed your meet and greets and ensuring you have all the necessary equipment in place (bed, lead/collar, food, bowls, toys, crate/dog gate etc) you will be able to complete the adoption paperwork and arrange to collect your new pet. We will stay in contact and offer ongoing support throughout your adoption journey.
Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary ask for an adoption donation of £80 for cats (2 for £120) and £200 for Dogs. Adoption fees may vary depending on the individual animal/owner. Puppies and Kittens may also vary.
What the adoption fee contributes towards
It is important to note that the adoption fee is not a purchase price for the animal, but rather a contribution towards the costs incurred by Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary in rescuing and caring for the animal in question.
The adoption fee has not been broken down into component parts, as it is more a contribution to the general care of the animal and the running of the sanctuary, but it will go towards the cost of the animals food and veterinary care, including health checks, vaccinations, spay or neuter if this was required, microchipping, and all of the other costs of pet ownership such as flea and worming treatments.
We have long waiting lists of animals needing to be rehomed Cats and Dogs in the highest demand. There is a community need for our new kennels and cattery facilities so please help us however you can.
You can email Claire.easterleigh@gmail.com should you want more information, to put an idea forward, donate to the charity or offer your time as a volunteer either at Moorsfield Farm or in one of our shops.
